Barr Co. reminds us of the hidden away nostalgia of Missouri caverns and slower times. Here lives memories of apothecaries and mom & pop general stores; reusable containers, quality products and the expected detailing of craftsmanship. It embodies the collection of antiques we marveled over in our grandparents and great-grandparents basements; it survives from the days that we churned butter by hand, scrubbed clothes with washboards and bought tobacco by the rope.

Plant life is currently transitioning from summer to fall plants, which for a week or two is leaving gardens slightly dull from the lack of vibrant color. But alas, behold the amazing color green! It is everywhere and astounding in its own color variation. Don’t be afraid of green in your plant selection. In all actuality, it is the sign of plant life and regeneration. Embrace foliage, like the hosta. Or for the truly adventurous, use ornamental cabbage; early fall is this plant’s day to shine.

Even though late summer storms periodically torment the afternoons, they are more than welcome after this drought-ridden summer. Rain is feeding thirsty plants and lush greens radiates in each garden. As a melancholy grey encompasses the air and sky, it only makes the green of each newly revived plant pop. One can’t help but enjoy the storms as drop after drop of water gracefully falls off each leaf on to the ground below.
